Antique Soumak, Afshar Tribes, Kerman Province, South ...

Item Ref
BM/FL2

Acquired recently from a private Iranian collection, this fabulous rug was woven in soumak technique by a very competent Afshar woman in Kerman Province, southern Persia circa 1920s.
It comprises six handsome lions in the field - something I have never seen before in Afshar soumak weaving - and with small, stylised peacocks scattered throughout. The rest of the design comprises beautifully-drawn stylised 'botehs'. The 'laleh abassi' main border is finely woven, a design of reciprocal arrow-heads symbolically keeping good from escaping the central field and preventing evil from entering. Note also the extra end panels comprising '8-pointed stars' - symbols of protection.
A truly rare and wonderful rug in mint condition.
Size: 1.95m x 1.22m (6' 5" x 4' 0").

Qashqa'i rugs don't come much earlier than this!
Made during the second half of the nineteenth century, the rug oozes nomadic life, depicting a single woman - left-centre - and various animals and birds depicted throughout. The stylised woman was probably the weaver herself! Two large Qashqa'i tribal emblems dominate the central indigo-blue field and all the natural colours are just beautifully saturated. Note too, the four corner spandrels are all decorated differently.
A magnificent example of the best of early Qashqa'i work, possibly made by the Kashkuli sub-tribe, in very good overall condition and a good, small, desirable size.
Size: 1.57 x 1.17m ( 5' 2" x 3' 10").

Wow! Look at all these lions in the border of this fantastic Afshar rug!
It is very unusual to find this stylised depiction of the Persian lion with the sun over its back symbolising the sun rising on the Persian Empire and more often seen in Persian city rugs. The rug is quite stunning in its own right but the use of the lion and sun border makes it quite unique and very desirable. The indigo ground contains three stylised flowers, bursting into life and I love the depiction of the two ivory trees on either side of the lower red flower. In very good condition albeit with some slight wool corrosion affecting the indigo-blue ground but only negligible.
Size: 1.73m x 1.20m (5' 8" x 4' 0").

The indigo-blue field contains a myriad of 'botehs' - flame symbols originating amongst the Zoroastrians of Kerman Province. Extremely finely knotted, this fabulous rug was made by Afshar tribes in the vicinity of Aqta' in Kerman Province during the second half of the nineteenth century.
The rug is in very good overall condition with an evenly-low pile and some expert areas of restoration. This is a highly collectible example of early Afshar weaving.

Antique Qashqa'i Khan Rug, Kashkuli Sub-Tribe, Fars ...

Item Ref
BM2196

This is one of the finest and most incredible Qashqa'i rugs I've come across in my over 40 years of handling many of the very best. This beautiful rug was probably made for a Khan or tribal chief, having complete silk-wefts throughout and in amazing condition for its age. It was made by an exemplary weaver of the Kashkuli 'tayefeh' or sub-tribe of the Qashqa'i Confederacy circa 1880. It comprises an ivory-ground with an overall design of the 'herati' pattern - two stylised fish opposing each other on either side of a water-lily - a symbol of happiness.
A magnificent and highly collectible rug.
Size: 2.10m x 1.32m (6' 11" x 4' 4").

Antique Qashqa'i Khan Carpet, Kashkuli Sub-Tribe, Fars ...

Item Ref
BM/QK

This magnificent carpet, with its sky-blue ground covered in stylised fish, referred to as the 'herati' design, was made for a Khan, and in this case, within the Kashkuli taifeh (sub-tribe). The stylised fish, usually two, swimming around water-lilies, symbolically depicts happiness. The design is therefore a water-garden.
The carpet, made by the Kashkuli circa 1860, is extremely finely knotted with rare silk wefts and in excellent overall condition.
Size: 2.40m x 1.60m (7' 10" x 5' 3").

This rug is outstanding! Certainly one of the very best Afshar rugs I've ever handled or even seen in private collections worldwide.
Having a rather illegible date in the madder-red panel, top right hand corner of the diagonal-band field design, my feelings are that this rug is early, possibly around 1870. Finely knotted, one needs to concentrate on the indigo-blue inner field which contains a myriad of birds, quadrupeds and human representation. The two cenral lozenges highlighted in sky-blue, contain '8-pointed stars', symbols of protection. But look at the upper star. It contains a small bird, symbolising the carrier of the soul from the earthly world to the realms of the spirit.
Altogether, an amazing and truly fabulous rug.

Antique Qashqa'i Tribal Rug, Fars Province, South-West ...

This rug had been hanging on the wall of a collector's English home for 40 years! It's an amazing rug. The animal and bird imagery is quite unique and I can say that it is one of the most interesting Qashqa'i rugs I've ever seen. Spend some time looking at the close-up images and you will see the phenomenal number of stylised creatures that abound throughout. I can see why the collector had it on his wall where he was able to just sit and look at it. The overall condition of the pile is very good. There are a few areas with minor wear and some old repairs but nothing major. The colours are all natural and I would guess the age of the rug to be circa 1860-1870. I can't speak highly enough of this rug - it's magnificent.
For the collector of Qashqa'i rugs, this is one not to be missed!

Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Neiriz Region, Kerman ...

Item Ref
BM2057

The so-called 'shield motif' depicted over the whole indigo-blue field of this magnificent carpet, is actually a representation of the double-headed sunbird opposing each other on either side of a small tree or shrub. This is a rare symbol on 19th century Afshar tribal rugs and one which, over many years, has been of a highly collectable group. The natural colours throughout are beautiful and the overall pile is in excellent condition, complete with striped kilim skirts each end.
Made circa 1860-1870 in the Neiriz region of Kerman Province, southern Persia, this stunning carpet would fit in well to a collector's pot pouree!
Size: 2.14m x 1.52m (7' 0" x 5' 0").

Antique Gabbeh, Qashqa'i Tribes, Fars Province, South-West ...

Item Ref
BM1040

Simply magnificent! Superb vegetable colours creating a wonderful colour palette. Made during the second half of the 19th century by Qashqa'i tribes in Fars Province, south-west Persia, gabbehs were made then for everyday use in the tents and for wrapping-up children during the long cold winter nights. Today, gabbehs are rare - most were used and discarded when worn out. Those that remain have become highly collectable. The overall condition of this gabbeh is good - evenly low pile but very acceptable.
Size: 2.34m x 1.40m (7' 8" x 4' 7").

Antique Afshar Tribal 'Masnad' (throne rug), Bardsir ...

Item Ref
BM1926

Just magnificent!
A very fine, rare small rug, probably made as a 'masnad' - a very special rug made as a ceremonial king's rug. When the king had no access to the royal throne, a small rug called a masnad substituted for the throne. Masnads were, however, mainly used within the Afshar tribes for the Khan to sit on when he made a visit.
The myriad of well-fed chickens depicted in the central indigo-blue field are generally associated with the nomads of the Khamseh Confederacy, but here we see the chickens rarely depicted in an Afshar piece!
Very special and highly collectible.

Antique Afshar Carpet, Afshar Tribes, Kerman Province, ...

BM1759

This beautiful nineteenth century Afshar tribal carpet is finely knotted with a highly stylised 'herati' pattern in the indigo-blue central field interspersed with 'double-headed birds heads' lozenges. The outer madder-red ground contains tiny stylised 'botehs' providing a powerful guard. The overall pile is evenly-low with no signs of any sporadic wear and the carpet is complete with plain-weave skirts each end.
This is truly a superb large carpet made by Afshar tribes in Kerman province, south Persia circa 1870 and has to be seen to be fully appreciated.
Size: 2.74m x 1.47m (9' 0" x 4' 10").
